Jewish Federation of Tulsa Applauds the Introduction of HB2243, a Landmark Bill to Combat Antisemitism in Oklahoma

The Jewish Federation of Tulsa strongly supports the introduction of HB2243, a pivotal piece of legislation that formally recognizes and defines antisemitism in Oklahoma law. This bill, introduced by Representative John Waldron, adopts the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism, ensuring that state agencies can effectively identify and address antisemitic discrimination.

The IHRA definition is the most widely accepted definition of antisemitism in the Jewish community and globally. It has been adopted by over 30 national governments, endorsed by the United Nations Secretary-General, and recognized by the European Union, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and countless civil society organizations, universities, and institutions worldwide. Its adoption in Oklahoma will provide critical guidance for identifying and combating antisemitism while upholding free speech.

Antisemitism continues to rise at an alarming rate across the United States, with Jewish Americans disproportionately targeted by hate crimes. HB2243 takes a crucial step in combating this growing threat by providing clear guidelines for recognizing antisemitism in discrimination cases.

Joe Roberts, Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Tulsa, emphasized the importance of this legislation, stating:
“For Jewish Oklahomans, HB2243 is more than policy—it is a statement that Oklahoma stands firmly with the Jewish community against rising hate. Antisemitism is not a relic of the past; it is an evolving and persistent threat that demands vigilance. By adopting the IHRA definition, Oklahoma is taking a crucial step in ensuring that our community is protected, our voices are heard, and our concerns are taken seriously. The IHRA definition is the gold standard in identifying and addressing antisemitism, and its adoption here will help build a safer and more inclusive Oklahoma for all.”

The Jewish Federation of Tulsa commends Representative John Waldron and all those supporting this legislation. We urge the Oklahoma Legislature to swiftly pass HB2243 and send a clear message that antisemitism has no place in our state.
