Our speaker for this series of Lunch Bunch will be author Connie Cronley speaking about her book A Life on Fire: Oklahoma’s Kate Barnard which has been named the best book of the year by the Oklahoma Historical Society. Author Connie Cronley has published three books of essays and coauthored the memoir of the late Edward Perkins, a career Foreign Service officer who was the United States’ first black ambassador assigned to South Africa during apartheid.

Background: Cronley is a columnist with TulsaPeople and Vintage, does a monthly KOTV book review and writes commentaries for public radio FM 89.5. She was executive director of Iron Gate soup kitchen and before that managing director of Tulsa Ballet Theatre.
About A Life on Fire: Oklahoma’s Kate Barnard:
This book will tell the story about Kate Barnard, a fiery social reformer and the first woman elected to state office in Oklahoma at statehood in 1907–almost fifteen years before women won the right to vote in the United States. National press called her “The Good Angel of Oklahoma.” Her campaign issues were children’s wellbeing, public education, criminal justice reform, mental health care and Native American rights—topics still dominating the press today. Her battles with the all-male political establishment of the era were legendary.
