The Jewish Federation of Tulsa Council for Holocaust Education presents the annual Kristallnacht Commemoration entitled Music Against All Odds. The many facets of Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass, provide myriad perspectives, and the program this year turns the focus to music.
Acclaimed flutist Christine Beard and accompanist Christi Zuniga will perform works that take us through history audibly and visually. The stories of the progression of Nazi oppression to dominance are told by the music’s composers. Christie will introduce each piece and narrate video images that reflect the conditions that were experienced during their composition. The evening performance will give the audience a sense of the emotions associated with the deteriorating climate before Kristallnacht, the despair afterward, and the too-often unrequited hope for peace.
The program includes the Kristallnacht Art Contest for middle and high school students, with winners announced.
Christine Erlander Beard enjoys an active international career as a soloist, chamber artist and teacher with engagements throughout North and South America and Europe. An artist for Sankyo Flutes and piccolo artist for Hernandez Flutes, she has performed as a concerto soloist with orchestras in Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Canada, Russia and the USA. Second Prize winner in the 2019 American Prize Professional Soloist division competition, she is a member of the International SuperFlutes Collective and Professor of Flute at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She launched #theflutistactivitst initiative – performing and commissioning composers to write pieces inspired by social justice issues – in 2019.
