Frank Memorial Lecture

Ruth Wisse, Martin Peretz Professor of Yiddish Literature and Professor of Comparative Literature (Emerita) at Harvard University, will deliver the eighth annual Irvin and Sharna Frank Memorial Lecture in Judaism and Contemporary Issues. Her lecture is entitled “Laughter in a Time of Crisis.” The lecture will take place at the Sylvan Auditorium of the Schusterman JCC at 7:30 PM on Sunday, September 11, and will be followed by a reception.
Ruth Wisse is the author of numerous books, including The Shlemiel as a Modern Hero; If I Am Not For Myself: The Liberal Betrayal of the Jews; The Modern Jewish Canon: A Journey Through Language and Culture; Jews and Power; and most recently, No Joke: Making Jewish Humor. She is a regular contributor to the op-ed page of the Wall Street Journal. In 2007, she was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President George W. Bush. The award honored her for “insightful writings have enriched our understanding of Yiddish literature and Jewish culture in the modern world.”
The Sharna and Irvin Frank Memorial Lecture honors Irv and Sharna’s creative vision and foresight by providing a forum for the serious exploration of Judaism and contemporary issues.
